The Direction of the Public Lighting is a direction within the City of Lyon which leads and insures the perennial lighting of the city. It has taken part of the Fête des Lumières since the beginning by sharing its know-how and its technical support.
Every year since 2005, the Direction has offered the illuminated path which leads the visitors during their wanderings and settles this particular atmosphere very specific to the Fête des Lumières. The service has also designed an installation since 2004 with the lighting of the Parc de la Tête d’Or’s greenhouse.
Former editions of the Fête des Lumières:
2005 : « The lighting falls » - Fourviere Hill
2006 : « Saint-Jean on stage» - Cathedrale Saint-Jean
2011 :« Children’s dream » - Montée de la Grande-Côte
2012 : « Illumination of Perrache vaults » - Perrache
2013 : « Show Case » - Place des Jacobins
2015: The Grand Théâtre Antique comes to life under the light of a flame in "Incandescens"
Strange and surprising light effects appear over the Tony Bertrand watersports centre… a meteor passes overhead, revealing the skyline of the swimming pool. Emerging from the darkness, this UFO is attracted by the modern architecture of the edifice, moored like a ship to the banks of the Rhône. The intense light captured by the centre becomes light energy that interacts and spreads over the site, electrifying the building and revealing amazing objects levitating around the pillars each side of the pool.
This meteor, overflowing with energy, swirls above the swimming pool, lighting it up and sprinkling stardust over the building. In a dizzying ballet, the particles join together and then fall apart, providing a hypnotic aerial display. With subtle grace, they create waves of light that play with the aquatic reflections of the pools.

The buildings are reflected and reveal themselves on the mirror-covered sides of this immense cube. Bathed in the warm sparkle of light, the visitor is struck by these visual experiments and optical illusions which create surprising and infinite perspectives of the Place des Jacobins.
Through an unusual itinerary between the place Carnot and the place des Archives, an aquatic world reveals itself to the public. Some mysterious fishes, stocked under the west vault, are looking for escaping themselves to join the Confluence. Once the exit found, the flying fishes take over the place to wear their most beautiful and colourful scales.
Each year Direction of Public Lighting undertakes an ambitious project aimed at highlighting and promoting the heritage of Lyon. In 2011 it focuses on the Montée de la Grande Côte, famous for the history of its canuts (silk workers) and recently transformed into a pedestrianised area with esplanades and gardens. The world of childhood occupies an important place there today and this lighting work is projected through the innocent, imaginative eyes of children, keeping back a few surprises and illuminated dreams…

This haven of peace where architecture and landscape are organised becomes wilder during the Fête des Lumières; the vegetation gains more freedom and takes over the place. Through the arcades, the facades, with a Renaissance and Italian style. Usually time-keepers the sculptures transformed by the lights, appear like strange creature in a world which has become hostile to men.
