The Festival kicks off to the peal of bells

On December 7 at 7:30 p.m., 30 minutes on the dot before “Enoha fait son cinéma ”, the light installation on Place des Terreaux, opens to the public, the bells of the City Hall carillon will chime to announce the opening of the Festival.

The City of Lyon’s official bell ringer and ringing master, Charles Dairay, will perform a 15-minute concert featuring extracts of film music inspired by the soundtrack of “Enoha fait son cinema”. How many of them will ring a bell?

On December 8 at 12:30 p.m. the bells will chime to mark this very special day for the citizens of Lyon which welcomes in the winter months and launches the countdown to Christmas.

►As the City  Hall courtyard is closed to the public during the day, the best places to listen to the concert are place des Terreaux and in front of the Opera.

Where is the carillon?

It is in the belfry of City Hall. If you look up when you are on place des Terreaux, you can see the shutters beneath the dome and the clock. With 65 bronze bells, it is France’s second biggest carillon. Some bells date back to the 17th Century but most are more recent and the latest arrival was cast in 2000, to mark the arrival of the 3rd millennium!
