Sign, by Dutch artists Vendel & de Wolf, creates an impressive blaze of fire on the water of the Place de la République. The work is made of aluminium-covered bamboo which, through the magic of light, looks like tongues of fire, shooting up as high as 9 metres into the air. Sometimes a log fire and sometimes a bonfire, the soft orange light of this installation manages to be both fascinating and a little scary. For while fire is a source of heat and symbolises transformation, it is also a sign of climate change. This fire, coming out of a pool of water, alerts audiences to the devastating effects of climate change, even on the banks of rivers.
