Built from 1872, it was inaugurated in 1896, but the interior decoration work was not completed until after the Second World War. As Lyon architect Pierre Bossan (1814-1888) died before the end of construction, his disciple Louis Sainte Marie Perrin (1835-1917) supervised the completion of the work. The basilica is 86 m long and 35 m wide. Its height at the top of the towers is 48 m. Its organ was built in 1896 by Michel Merklin and restored in 1996.
