It once stood opposite a stone bridge. The square - known at the time as the place de l’Herberie - probably dates back to the 12th or 13th century where, together with the place de la Vieille-Boucherie and the place de la Pêcherie, it formed a trading zone.  In the 18th century, the place de la Vieille-Boucherie also took the name of l’Herberie before becoming the southern end of the rue Chavanne and the place de la Pêcherie has now been incorporated in the Quai de la Pêcherie. The Place de l'Herberie was overlooked by a single building called the roundhouse which stood out thanks to the belvedere in the middle of its roof. It belonged to the Albon family.
