Light-emitting insects? It’s hardly a surprise that they are this festival’s special guests!

What is the collective noun for a group of fireflies? A swarm seems too beastly. A lantern? A twinkle? A shimmer of fireflies? You decide! Firefly Field is a mesmerising light installation made up of numerous flying light points that mimic the way fireflies move. They glow, dart and hover above the ground. The ever-changing bioluminescence of each little bug is reflected in the grassy slope. All together they create a dynamic light scene that sparks visitors’ curiosity.

Fireflies and Lampyris noctiluca, better known as glow worms, often feature in children’s picture books. In real life, they contribute to maintaining an ecological balance by controlling populations of caterpillars, snails and slugs. Glow worms can be found on every continent. There are around 2,000 identified species and nearly all of them emit light!
